We found cheap houses for sale all over the country. My partner Ana and I were on the seven-week drive round the country. It had been a secondary, but we looked over houses too, and ordered one-in a terrific little town in the mountains of western Montana. It cost $17,500, and we lived there for almost a year before attempting to sell it for $28,000, after $2000 to correct it up.
We loved Anaconda. Where else can you fly fish, go to a three-dollar film in a old art-deco theatre (the 5th most beautiful in the nation, in line with the Smithsonian), drop some nickles in a slot machine game, eat at a fine restaurant, visit the club for a money beer, and get a house for under $30,000 - all within a four-block area! There are great schools and churches, a collection with rapid internet service, and wildlife (including bears) a few hundred yards from downtown.
Why Are There Inexpensive Houses Available?
There are cheap houses in Anaconda, and regional Butte because there aren't many good jobs. I quickly found careers in Anaconda - but not great people. This explains why people left the location inside the 80's, following the mines and smelters closed.
Thirteen percent of the "housing units" in Anaconda are empty, according to the 2000 U.S. census. This has driven down the house prices considerably. Because it still has most of the basic ammenities, is cleaner now, and is gradually recovering, it's a great place to retire to or to go to in case you have a web or other non-location-based business.
An unhealthy local economy is the reason you should buy inexpensive homes in many elements of the united states. These are towns which have seen troubled times, but are often recovering, often with reasons. Anaconda, like, now has, as well as it's wonderful mountain scenery, a ski resort and a Jack Nicholas golf course. Properties cost four times the maximum amount of one hour in any way, and those costs are bound to-reach Anaconda ultimately.
Inexpensive Houses You Do not Want To Buy
You will find towns just like the one in South Dakota where we stopped for lunch one day. A bulletin board had adverts for inexpensive homes for sale by desperate people trying not to be the last to leave town. There is a photo of a beautiful old five-bedroom farmhouse for $11,000. As we ate, we looked up the empty road and realized that a lot of the buildings were boarded-up. This is a dying village, with nothing to help fix it. A totally free home would not be a good enough reason to go here.
Cheap Home For Sale - Our Standards
There are many wonderful towns, from Florida to Oregon, where there are cheap homes for sale. After our Montana experience, we started a web site about them. In order to make our number what does a town need? The criteria are truly subjective, but include a minimum of the following:
1. Citizenry of 4,000 to 80,000.
2. Reasonable collection.
3. Great grocery store.
4. Cinema.
5. At the very least six houses on the market under $50,000.
6. The city includes a good "feel" to it.
After much study, we found several towns that met our criteria, including some with domiciles at under $30,000. There really are wonderful cities out there where you can find inexpensive homes available.
